CWF League May 2017 – Final Session Of The Spring Season
The CWF League May 2017 session was the last of the Spring season and the matches were played in glorious sunshine at the Cheshire FA HQ in Northwich.
In the 16 matches played, 11 goals were scored, with seven 0-0 draws, seven 1-0 wins and two 2-0 wins.
In the Premier Division, Northgate Strollers took the title for the third time out of the four league competitions since the league started in 2015. The Strollers won 2 and drew two in this final session. Nearest rivals and last seasons league winners Wigan Walkers won two, drew one and lost one. The title went to the wire with 2 points separating both teams in their final match against each other.
A win for Wigan would mean a second title in succession, where a draw for Northgate would be enough to win the league. In the event Northgate came away win a 1-0 win to make it a 5 point winning margin.
Nantwich Barony came third and Widnes and Helsby Old Boys, who both won one, drew one and lost two, came fourth and fifth respectively, both on 16 points, Helsby bottom on inferior goal difference.
In the Championship Division, leaders Vintage Celtic took the title with a 4 point margin over Crewe Alexandra, and just one loss to their name in the Spring season. It was another division which went to the wire with Celtic drawing two and winning one. Crewe won one, drew one and lost one on the day.
What could have been a title decider between the two teams ended in a 0-0 draw. With Celtic winning their third and final match it meant that they couldn’t be caught even if Crewe won their final two games. A loss to Northgate Rovers in their second match ended Crewe’s title hopes.
Northgate Rovers finished third, followed by Neston Nomads, with 1874 Northwich bottom of the table. The Northwich team were unfortunately unable to field a side in this final session, so the other four teams in the division were all given a 1-0 walkover.
The CWF League May 2017 session finished another successful season of the Cheshire Walking Football League. Thanks to George Brady, league secretary and Bill Tynan, league treasurer for their administrations on a great day’s walking football and of course all the teams who participated. We hope to see you all in the Autumn season starting in September and before that in the Cup Tournament on Saturday the 15th July.
